Jay L. Schottenstein, Chairman of SB Capital Group, also serves as Chairman and CEO of Schottenstein Stores Corporation, Chairman of American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO), Chairman of Retail Ventures Inc. (NYSE: RVI), parent company of Value City Department Stores, Filene's Basement and DSW, and CEO of American Signature Furniture and Value City Furniture.  The son of the late businessman and philanthropist, Jerome M. Schottenstein, Jay is a graduate of Indiana University in Business Administration.

David Bernstein

President

David Bernstein, one of the founding principals and President of SB Capital Group, LLC, has spent his entire career associated with the retail industry.  After serving in various senior capacities with several old-line retail companies, David went on to head the largest retail re-organization company in the country.  David received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business from NYU in New York.

Matthew Bernstein

Principal
As a principal of SB Capital Group, Matt Bernstein has over 20 years experience in the retail consulting industry.  With an emphasis on the day to day operations of the company, Matt also heads up the marketing and advertising departments of SB Capital Group.  He received his BFA degree from Ithaca College.

Scott Bernstein

Principal, Chief Operating Officer

Scott is the principal of SB Capital Group charged with the direction of all activities and transactions of the Company.  Formerly a practicing attorney, Scott received his Juris Doctor degree from the National Law Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and his Bachelor of Arts from Union College in Schenectady, New York.  Scott serves on the Board of Directors of The J. Peterman Company as well as Official Pillowtex, LLC.  He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Turnaround Management Association and is a frequent speaker on topics of concern to the distressed asset community.

Holger Butcher

Executive Vice President - SBG Capital Group, Canada

Holger Butcher comes to SBG Capital Group with more than thirty years of hands-on international experience with appraisals and asset recovery.  Holger most recently held a senior position with a well-known, international auction and appraisal company and, in his twenty three year history with them, conducted appraisals across a broad spectrum of major industries.  Prior to that, Holger spent ten years working for a major machine tool dealer in North America and Mexico.  Holger's experience and client roster with both appraisals and asset recovery has included many of the most recognizable industrial names, including several Fortune 500 companies throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan.

John W. Duffy

Controller

John joined Schottenstein Stores Corporation in 1983, where he held various accounting positions for ten years before assuming the role of Controller for SB Capital Group in 1993.  John graduated from Ohio State University with a BS degree in Business Administration.  He became a CPA in 1981 and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Society of CPAs.

Gary Goldsmith

Vice President - FF&E
Gary came to SB Capital Group as a field consultant and auctioneer in 1999 and is now focused on the FF&E Industrial Group and the Auction Division.  Gary has earned the Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) designation, which is the highest designation awarded in the auction industry, and is a member of the National Auctioneers Association and the Ohio Auctioneers Association.  Gary also has a GPPA (Graduate Personal Property Appraiser) certification for machinery and equipment.  Gary received his MBA from Fontbonne College and a BA from Greenville College.

Stephen Jenkins

Vice President - Auctions & Technology
Stephen has been with SB Capital Group since 1999 in various roles and now concentrates on auctions and appraisals within our fixed asset disposition services.  Stephen has a GPPA (Graduate Personal Property Appraiser) certification and in 2006, earned the Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) designation, which is the highest designation awarded in the auction industry.  Stephen has a BS degree in Business Administration from Colorado Technical University and has also completed a two year Electrical Engineering degree from Muskingum Perry.

Hal Kaplan

Senior Vice President - Appraisal Division

Hal Kaplan comes to us with more than twenty years of operational experience in financial analysis and management, including seven years as Principal of an automotive distribution company.  Prior to joining SB Capital Group, Hal concentrated on industrial appraisals with a specialization for determining values with inventory build-outs.  Hal earned an MBA in Accounting from Babson College and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from Northeastern University.

Michael Kara

Vice President, Senior Appraiser - Appraisal Division

Michael Kara helps conduct and manage inventory appraisals and valuations for our clients throughout North America.  These valuation projects include inventory analyses performed in conjunction with the due diligence process and/or the monitored updates necessary for various financial transactions.  Michael's experience has included valuation projects for a wide array of materials and products covering a multitude of specialties and industries.  Prior to joining SB Capital Group in 2005, Michael was an appraiser for Inventory/Machinery & Technical Specialties with a nationally recognized valuation and asset disposition group.

Morten Kucey

Senior Vice President - Marketing & Business Development
Morten started his career with SB Capital Group in our Toronto, Canada office in January of 2000 and came to the U.S. in 2002 to help implement and oversee business development and strategic marketing functions for the company.  Prior to joining SB Capital Group, Morten worked as a merchant banker in the venture capital area of Hill & Gertner Capital Group in Toronto.  Morten has also held senior consulting positions with two of the largest fundraising consulting firms in New York and Toronto.  Morten has a Masters in International Business and Marketing from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland and a BBA from Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec.

Thomas Mitchell

Senior Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer
Thomas joined SB Capital Group in January of 1999 and now has direct oversight of all U.S. transactions including Finance, Asset Disposition, Appraisals, Real Estate, and the FF&E Industrial Group.  Prior to joining SB Capital Group, Tom spent four and a half years with the auditing practice of Arthur Andersen, LLP.  Tom received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the Stern School of Business at New York University and is a Certified Public Accountant with membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Robert Raskin

Managing Director

Robert Raskin joined SB Capital Group, LLC in January, 2002 as the Managing Director.  Rob specializes in negotiating and structuring acquisitions and is involved in the development and implementation of all transactions.  Rob was formerly a partner in the Insolvency Group at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, where he developed a specialty in representing purchasers of assets from Chapter 11 debtors.  He was counsel to creditors’ committees and debtors-in-possession in various nationally known bankruptcy cases and has also represented debtor-in-possession financiers in numerous cases. 

Rob received his BS Degree summa cum laude from Syracuse University and his J.D. from New York University.  He is co-author of The Creditors’ Committee Manual published by Warren, Gorham & Lamont and has been a member of the Bankruptcy and Corporate Reorganization Committee of the New York City Bar Association.  Rob is currently chairman of the New York Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association and has previously served as president of the chapter.

Gary Robinson

Senior Vice President

Gary began his retail career while in college and had become a senior manager with a local Indiana department store by the time he graduated from Ball State University.  Over the next few years, Gary held several senior management and merchandising positions with a variety of specialty retailers and department stores including Meis Brothers, L.S. Ayres & Co., Gidding-Jenney, and Byck's.  Gary started with us as a field supervisor for retail asset disposition projects in 1988 and joined the New York office in 2001.  In addition to his retail, wholesale, and marketing oversight responsibilities, Gary brings his years of experience to the planning, structuring and implementation of all retail transactions.

Dathard V. Steele

Chief Financial Officer
Dathard "Doc" Steele began his professional career in 1977 as controller for Mollmann and Associates, a deferred compensation firm in Ohio.  Doc joined the Shonac Corporation as a financial controller in 1982 and has continued his career with the Schottenstein family of companies, holding a variety of senior finance positions in several subsidiaries and Schottenstein controlled companies.  As Chief Financial Officer of SB Capital Group, Doc brings his years of experience to the structure and implementation of all transactions.  Doc received his Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the College of William and Mary, and graduated cum laude with a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from the Capital University Law School.

James M. Thieken

Senior Vice President - Finance and Operations
Jim has spent his entire career with SB Capital Group, garnering over 16 years of experience in the coordination and implementation of all types of operational and financial strategies.  Over the length of his tenure, Jim has been involved in almost every aspect of our business including financial analysis, appraisals, asset disposition, and going concern acquisitions.  Among Jim's numerous responsibilities is his active involvement in the planning, structure and implementation of many of our transactions.

Bob Wysinski

Senior Vice President - Appraisal Division
Bob joined the Schottenstein family of companies in 1973, holding various positions in the finance area of Schottenstein Stores Corporation for eight years.  In 1991, Bob was named Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Value City Department Stores, Inc., a Schottenstein affiliate, and after serving in that role for nine years, moved over to join us at SB Capital Group in 2000.  Bob's earlier experience came from three years with the audit practice of Arthur Andersen.  Bob graduated from Wright State University with a BS in Business Administration and a major in accounting.  Bob became a CPA in 1971 and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Ohio Society of CPAs and the Commercial Finance Association.

Gerard J. Zeppieri

Senior Vice President - Director of Operations
Gerry Zeppieri began his retail career in 1974 with Morse Shoe which was acquired by J. Baker Inc. during his tenure.  With Morse Shoe/J. Baker, Gerry held various managerial roles of increasing responsibility over a 20 year career.  Gerry joined SB Capital Group in 1995 as a field supervisor and became Director of Operations in 2000.  Gerry attended Rutgers University and received his Bachelors Degree in Business Management from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
